The MMU Story Marches On

I’ve been fascinated with the famous untethered space walk by astronaut Bruce McCandless in 1984 for several years now. I’ve written several articles on it and created one video.  I am having changing thoughts on this event and will share them below.  It’s an event well known and accepted in the history of space exploration and lifted to legendary status.  Forty years on and it still appears in video’s online, science articles and even McCandless’s son jumped in the fray to write a biography of his father’s life and importantly, the adventure in tether-less space walking.  I am  intrigued at how an event like this is so well documented, which at the same time, is contradicted by NASA’s own official documents. Which means, despite the incredible photos created of the space walk as it was supposedly taking place it couldn’t have happened.  At least not the way we were told.

"NASA gets away with a lot.  Mainly due to a complaint, unquestioning science and technology media.  If America’s premier space agency chooses to deceive the public they can. And do.  I can tell from my own research experience that NASA documents often contradict their press releases and in turn, contradict the articles by science based journalists.  It is as if these journalists are not reading the source documents.  Actually, their articles often resemble PR releases for NASA."

How NASA Faked The MMU

Although I have already written an article on NASA’s jet pack (LINK), I decided to do a video presentation on it since it is one of NASA’s biggest PR stunts.

NASA’s public relations stunt.

The purpose of the MMU was to allow astronauts to float free of the space shuttle without being restricted by a tether.  As things later turned out, they went back to the tether and ended up wasting millions of dollars on development and deployment.  But why?  Mostly likely due to issues explained below.  Issues of which, NASA has never been forthcoming on.
