I am having changing thoughts on this event and will share them below. It’s an event well known and accepted in the history of space exploration and lifted to legendary status. Forty years on and it still appears in video’s online, science articles and even McCandless’s son jumped in the fray to write a biography of his father’s life and importantly, the adventure in tether-less space walking. I am intrigued at how an event like this is so well documented, which at the same time, is contradicted by NASA’s own official documents. Which means, despite the incredible photos created of the space walk as it was supposedly taking place it couldn’t have happened. At least not the way we were told.
